Job, Moses and the Exodus of the Israelites

Summary of the Module

In the first lesson of this 4th module of Sacred History, we will look at the life of a pre-figure of our Lord Jesus Christ: Job.

The central theme of the description is the tragedy of a righteous man who was prosperous and enjoyed an abundance of natural goods. However, wanting God to measure the value of his virtue, He allows countless punishments to fall upon him. This drama brings a real insight into the history of true religion: the just can also suffer.

And this doctrine will only reach its fullness with the coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the exemplary cause of every Christian, and since Our Lord has suffered, we too must suffer, but not with bitterness and sadness, for He Himself will be our reward in Eternity.

In subsequent lessons (Lessons 2-8), we will also contemplate an epic character, “the humblest of men” (Num 12:3), “with whom the Lord talked face to face” (Deut 34:10): Moses!

To get a better idea of this prophet’s great feat, let’s recall the eloquent description given by a French writer named André Frossard:

“Moses is perhaps the greatest man who ever lived, and all because Jesus Christ is God. His public life, which began at the age of eighty, unfolded under a stormy sky, only illuminated from time to time by the pastoral interlude of a sweetness without tomorrow. He made Israel a people and a religion on the march, arrayed around his law, like an army around its flag. The prodigious eloquence of this man who stuttered filled the Old Testament with his bronze sonority, whose Wagnerian grandeur eternally rolls its mighty waves under the peaceful skies of the Gospel.” (FROSSARD, André. “Moisés.” In: Historia. Paris: nº.289. Dec. 1970. p.56).

So let’s start another module of our course, admiring the heroism of Job and following the adventures of the Chosen People, led by Moses, thus getting to know the inspired beauty of these biblical narratives in greater depth.
