Tomás Luís de Victoria (1548-1611), a great Spanish priest and musician of the Renascence, had a very daring intention with the music Tenebræ factæ sunt: put into melody the moment of Our Lord Jesus Christ’s death. The composition is part of the Office of Holy Week, written by Victoria in 1585, also known as the Office of darkness, since, in those days, it was sung at dusk on Good Friday.
